Early 20th Century Signed Tabriz Carpet
Early 20th Century signed Tabriz carpet from the city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has been known as a major centre of fine rug weaving since at least the 14th Century.
Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their tight weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design.
This carpet, dating to the 1920s, and bearing the signature of one of the master weavers of its era, is a particularly rare and sophisticated example of its type, since it demonstrates a much greater creative freedom than one would expect of a Tabriz rug from this period.
With a rare muted salmon pink ground, this carpet is a unique example of its type, featuring a creative but restrained composition, featuring simplified design motifs from earlier, more classical Tabriz weavings, reflecting a modern artistic sensibility.
The drawing in the central field employs a diverse, bold palette, including tones of ocean green, cornflower blue and ochre yellows, framed by a wide ivory border.
Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, with its original borders preserved on all sides.
A handsome carpet, with a strikingly modern feel, which would compliment a stylish interior.
