20th Early Century Qum Carpet
20th Century early Qum carpet.
Unlike many of the other Persian rug-weaving centres, Qum only established itself as a centre of production in the early 20th Century, though its carpets quickly established a reputation for the tightness of their weaves, the quality of the wool – often Merino – and the elegance and precision of their designs; this piece is certainly no exception: the richness of the dye, the grade of the weaving, and the skill of its makers are all visible in every detail.
The design of this example features a repeated paisley pattern, in a wide palette, ranging from tones of carnelian red to ocean blue, complimented by the ivory field, and framed by a wide border.
Its vegetable dyes have taken on a fine patina with age, giving an earthy quality to its colours which lends the carpet a feeling of understated grace.
The botteh motif in its design is an ancient Zoroastrian pattern, originally representing the evergreen cypress tree, a symbol of everlasting life.
This piece is in very good condition for everyday use, retaining its original borders and short fringes on both sides, and would make a charming addition to any setting.
