19th Century Agra Carpet
A beautiful 19th-century Agra carpet with a remarkably tight weave which gives great clarity to the crisp drawing.
The exquisite backdrop, with muted greens, creates a perfect harmony of colours. The naturally vegetable-dyed colours have aged gracefully. The simple design is framed by over a dozen borders.
The Indian city of Agra is well known as the home of the Taj Mahal and has a long tradition of master carpet weaving. The workshops of Agra created carpets of exemplary quality and artistry, making them some of the most sought-after carpets. These are often found in historic houses in both the UK and Europe.
Agra carpets date back to the great period of Mughal Art from the 16th century. This early Agra carpet is in very good to excellent condition and still retains its original borders on all four sides. A rare feature for a rug dating 1890.
This is a sophisticated Agra carpet with a quiet formality that would blend in well in a stylish interior setting.
