Early 19th Century 'rat de cave' candlestick.
Rat de cave, or cellar rat, candlesticks were used to light French wine cellars in the 18th and 19th Centuries.
These are functional yet beautiful pieces, comprised of a wrought iron corkscrew spiral over a base. The spiral form was designed to control the height of the candle flame.
The 'rat's tail' at the top coould be used as a handle, or hooked onto casks whilst down in the cellar.
Primitive and unique decorative piece, with a lovely aged patina.
