20th Century Veramin Carpet
Antique Veramin carpets are widely recognized as among the most exceptional Persian workshop weavings, best known for their remarkable quality, fine crisp drawings and wide variety of rich vegetable-dyed colours.
Early Veramin pieces would have been woven by the Shahsavan tribe, who settled in the city of Veramin after migrating from Northwest Persia, bringing with them the characteristic designs that set these carpets apart from those from the neighbouring regions.
This wonderful example, dating to c. 1900, features an understated palette, with muted sky blue, sage green and ochre tones, with soft ivory highlights. The design employs a lattice pattern of pomegranate blossoms, symbolising prosperity, fertility and longevity, originally drawn from 18th Century rugs from Azerbaijan and, owing to the skill of its artist, here with a remarkably crisp quality.
Still retaining its original borders and short fringes at both ends, this carpet is in very good to excellent condition; a timeless work of art, to add character to any setting.
