20th Century Venus Garden Statue
A life size 20th Century cast iron garden statue of Venus.
This beautiful statue is almost six foot tall, making her slightly larger than life. It is likely a copy of the iconic Venus de Milo statue- one of art history's most significant sculptures, now in the Louvre Museum.
The Venus de Milo is believed to have been carved from marble by Alexandros of Antioch in the 2nd Century BCE. She was discovered in pieces on the Aegean island of Melos in 1820 and presented to Louis XVIII, who then donated it to the Louvre.
Although she was pieced back together, Venus de Milo's arms were never found and reproductions of this statue are now distinctive for their armless form.
This statue is a fine example of Hellenistic artistry. Her sinuous form and drapery makes this a typical combination of the feminity and nobility associated with Venus.
However, there is some debate as to which goddess the Venus de Milo was supposed to represent. Aphrodite was often portrayed in this semi-nude form, whilst the sea goddess Amphitrite was associated with Melos, where the original statue was found.
This is a striking, iconic statue which will transform a garden or even a large airy foyer.
