1950s German Holophane Cage Light
Industrial polished Holophane pendant cage light. Crafted from aluminium, steel and glass. Germany, 1950s.
Holophane refers to clear moulded glass or crystal shades and globes that feature parallel or crosscut prisms.
The Greek root of the word Holophane means 'balanced light distribution,' which is exactly what this new form of lighting achieved.
This revolutionary light was invented by French scientist Andre Bondel and Turkish engineer Spiridion Psaroudaki in the 1890s. Their 1896 US patent describes Holophane as having a 'luminous appearance over its entire surface... entirely shining.'
Vintage Holophanes are striking pieces of 20th Century industrial art and they are the perfect lighting for a kitchen or dining space.
