Louis XVI Revival Bergère

  • H: 108 cm (42 1/2")
  • W: 74 cm (29 1/8")
  • D: 74 cm (29 1/8")

19th Century, walnut wing-back armchair in the Louis XVI style.

This chair is a beautiful example of the bergère style, which has enclosed sides and a deep, wide seat cushion. This chair is an unusual variation on the usual Louis XVI bergère, due to its high wing back.

The fauteil and the bergère were two iconic chairs associated with the French monarchy. Both have exposed carved wood frames, but the fauteil has open sides unlike the bergère.

These chairs originated in Paris in the 18th Century and were one of the first styles to prioritise comfort and luxury.

This example clearly exhibits the straight-lined elegance favoured by Louis Seize and the floral motifs to the cube sections at the top of the chair legs are reminiscent of Georges Jacob, a prolific cabinet-maker of the period.

Traditionally re-upholstered and seat cushion is feather-filled. [Seat H:43cm Seat D:50cm]
