Wonderful antique mercury glass 'witches ball.' Circa 1900.

These are fantastically decorative and collectible, at any time of year but particularly at Christmas and during the winter months.

These heavy spherical balls were handblown and silvered, hence the slightly uneven surface and foxing to the mercury glass.

They are associated with numerous supersitions. Some place them hanging in shop windows in the 18th and 19th Centuries, to ward off evil spirits. It was thought that witches could be entrapped by their own reflection.

Others believe these balls were originally a primitive burglar alarm of sorts, with their reflective properties betraying the identity of anyone approaching.

With a handle to the top, so that this ball can be hung in a variety of settings.
