Mid 20th Century Swedish Flatweave Carpet
Flatweave carpets – known as röllakan – have been woven in Sweden since the 17th Century or earlier, but experienced a particular revival in the mid-20th Century, incorporating elements of both mid-century modern and folk design.
These pieces are widely sought after by collectors and designers today, known for their elegant simplicity and charm. This finely handwoven contemporary flatweave, inspired by Swedish weavings from the mid-20th Century, represents a wonderful example of its type.
A highly attractive feature is the variation in tone, achieved by the interweaving of various muted tones of denim, sky blue, and duck egg blue in each interlocking panel. This use of colour in the overall drawing lends a great sense of depth and character to its otherwise restrained, minimalist composition, well complemented by the ochre and midnight blue accents between the panels and in the borders.
A stylish, understated carpet, with the versatility to blend into a variety of settings.
