Mid Century Chinese Carpet
Pioneered by Walter Nichols, an American in China whose workshops were active from 1924 into the 1930s, Chinese Art Deco carpets represent a real high point in the history of 20th Century design.
These pieces are highly sought after, standing out for their unique combination of traditional Chinese elements, alongside design motifs borrowed from the Art Deco movement, which dominated the decorative arts of America and Europe during the period.
This mid-century example features similar designs, with a delicate blossom design in the opposite corners worked in soft pastel tones, creating a playful contrast with the carpet’s otherwise stark, monochrome palette, with its ivory ground and muted lavender border.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with a gentle age-related patina to its colours. A charming piece, to compliment either a contemporary or a classic interior.
