Mid-Century Dhurrie Flatweave Carpet
Dhurrie carpets, renowned for the elegant simplicity of their designs have been woven for centuries on the Indian Subcontinent, but went through a real Renaissance in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, as they began to catch the eye of the Western market.
Incorporating floral motifs from European weavings - finally, in the 1960s, the American designer Irwin Carey began to commission dhurries from India, and secured their place as a staple of mid-century design.
This fine c. 1940s dhurrie is a wonderful example of its type, featuring simplified, large-scale floral designs in an overall pattern over a soft duck-egg blue field, framed by a decorative border. Its fine vegetable dyes have taken on a wonderful patina with age, lending the carpet a feeling of understated grace.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, this carpet would make a charming addition to any space.
