Pair of Doulton Terracotta Urns

  • H: 77 cm (30 5/16")
  • W: 60 cm (23 5/8")
  • D: 60 cm (23 5/8")

Beautiful pair of Doulton Lambeth terracotta urns, which are matching apart from their differing sizes.

These urns are in a good overall condition, with a beautifully weathered patina.

They feature the exceptional modelling that typifies Doulton stoneware, with crisply carved acanthus decoration and carved borders to the bases.

The Doulton pottery was founded by John Doulton (1793-1873) and John Watts. The pair were trading from Lambeth High Street by 1826.

Henry Doulton (b.1820) joined the company at the age of fifteen and went on to join the management committee at The Lambeth School of Art. It was Henry who encouraged the company to make more decorative wares.

Doulton employed hundreds of students from the art school over the years and the firm went on to win many awards at national and international exhibitions.

In 1956 the Lambeth factory closed, partly due to the Clear Air Act. The company's legacy is as much about its social initiatives as its stoneware.

The larger urn measures 77cm high, 60cm wide, and 60cm deep. The smaller urn measures 70cm high, 53cm wide, and 53cm deep.

Brilliantly decorative pair for the garden or indoors.
