Pair of 19th Century mezzotints of William IV and Queen Adelaide.
Published in September 1831 to mark the coronation of William IV by M. Colnaghi, Printseller in Ordinary to his Majesty and HRH the Duchess of Kent. Both are in their original frames.
There is slight staining to the bottom of the Queen Adelaide mezzotint but this does not detract from its overall charm.
A label on the back of Queen Adelaide reads Lady Knightley of Fawsley. These originally hung at Fawsley Hall in Northamptonshire until the death of Lady Louisa Knightley in 1913 and would have been sold at auction. Her father was an equerry to William IV and it is likely that the mezzotints would have been passed down to Louisa. She had an interesting and varied life, was a women's rights activist and befriended John Merrick (the "Elephant Man") who was given a cottage on her estate.
