Pair of 19th Century Italian Anchovy Pots
SKU
DA7434489
This pair of two tone ‘anchovy pots’ were originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies and sardines, as well as figs or olives, in olive oil.
Dating back to the late 1800s, commonly associated with the Grottaglie region of Puglia, known for its age old ceramic craft.
This robust, rustic pot features two handles and sgraffito banding around the top section.
Often a linen cloth was tied around the top with a rope (around the indents) to keep the insects out of its contents. The two tone glaze is not so common with these pots together with drips of green make these even more unique.
