Pair Of 19th Century Italian Scabello Chairs
Pair of beautifully carved Italian Renaissance Revival side chairs.
This ornate pair of escabello chairs originate from Tuscany and date to the 19th Century. Each chair, or backstool, is carved with female figures on either side of a central mask. The crest bears a carved shell. The seat has a carved foliate border. The base features two carved dolphins with entwined tails Known as sgabello, derived from scabellum (Latin for ‘stool’), they traditionally lined the walls of palaces or large country houses.
In very good antique condition, with some expected restoration to back support.
