Pair of Bronze Sculptures of Fortuna and Mercury

  • H: 48 cm (18 7/8")

Pair of English 19th Century bronze sculptures of Fortuna and Mercury.

In beautifully patinated bronze, the figures are depicted in spritely poses with each standing on one leg.

Fortuna, the goddess of chance and fortune, holds a cornucopia and rests on a wheel of some sort - symbolic of the uncertainty that comes with fortune and luck.

Mercury, the god of shopkeepers and merchants, is depicted with his signature staff and his foot rests on the upturned face of a child.

These wonderful sculptures were likely inspired by Giambologna (1529-1608). The famous sculptor is particularly well-known for his representation of Mercury, sculpted in 1508 for Ferdinando de'Medici. The sculpture eventually ended up in the Uffizi museum in Florence.

This pair will be a brilliant feature in any interior.
