Pair of Early 19th Century Italian Frames with Earlier Wax Medallions
Early 19th century giltwood frames with original glass and panels of moiré, richly embroidered in gold, silver and silk thread, each contains a wax medallion, probably 18th century.
These Catholic reliquaries were originally worn, but are also richly mounted for hanging.
One medallion depicts Saint Luke the Evangelist. The lettering also mentions Clement VIII, the 16th century Pope, who made a ruling about the manufacture of these medallions, the top of this medallion is cracked. The other, larger, medallion shows a saint in neo-Classical dress holding a palm frond, sign of his martyrdom.
The lettering has worn down however and is not legible.
