Pair of Early 20th Century French Régence Style Giltwood Armchairs
An exceptional pair of early 20th Century French Régence style giltwood Armchairs.
These chairs were probably made in Paris, inspired by the designs of the Régence period in France (1715-1723).
The frames have a centred carved shell on the crest rail. The front, back and side seat rails all serpentine with carved scallop shells to the centre and the cabriole legs terminating in hoof feet. The knees of the chair are finely carved with angled shells and foliage and the tops of the arms are carved with an interesting guilloche design incorporating diamonds or lozenges. The high backs and stately proportions are quite baroque. We have upholstered the chairs to in an antique linen.
Circa 1900.
