Pair of French Commodes with Marble Tops

  • H: 99.5 cm (39 3/16")
  • W: 161 cm (63 3/8")
  • D: 67 cm (26 3/8")

Fantastic pair of large 20th Century French commodes in the Louis XV style.

These commodes have a show-stopping presence and display excellent cabinet-making throughout.

They have subtle serpentine fronts and curved sides. They feature decorative kingwood parquetry and lozenge marquetry inlay, as well as cross-banding.

The drawers are of exceptional quality, with veneered tops to the draw fronts.

The gilt bronze mounts throughout are of exceptional quality, including the handles, escutcheons, and spandrels. Most notable are the fine quality mask-head mounts to the sides.

Substantial marble tops sit above three short drawers and one long drawer, all with keys.

This pair are supported on elegant cabriole legs bearing a fleur-de-lis, and the legs terminate with very decorative brass sabots.

There is an initialed stamp to the top of one of these commodes.

This pair combines a range of techniques with excellent results and testify to the fine quality cabinetwork and marquetry decoration that could still be achieved in the 20th Century.

Given that single commodes are more common, this pair is particularly desirable and will bring wonderful symmetry and cohesion to a room.
