Pair of Maharaja Wooden His and Hers Chairs

  • H: 93 cm (36 5/8")
  • W: 60 cm (23 5/8")
  • D: 60 cm (23 5/8")

Pair of Maharaja 'His and Hers' wooden ceremonial chairs.

The Maharaja is a historical term for a Hindu prince ranking above the raja, who ruled one of the principal native states of India. The title was introduced sometime in the 1st Century BCE.

This pair of chairs would have been for ceremonial purpose, akin to a royal throne. The smaller of the two would have been for the Maharani, the wife of the Maharaja.

Indian furniture is renowned for fusing a range of artistic styles and this pair are no exception. The turned legs are very Anglo-Indian, as English influence had become predominant in India since the 18th Century.

However, the intricately carved wood of these chairs with dense vine patterning is typical of Indian furniture. The bronze tiger head's on the arms also give these chairs distinctive Indian style and opulence. The chairs feature decorative oval painted panels on each back and side.

This pair are upholstered with attractive crushed velvet.
