Beautiful pair of Victorian terracotta bottleneck rhubarb forcers. English, early 20th Century. 

This pair are in very good condition and beautifully weathered.

Forcers like these were used to cover rhubarb in order to limit the process of photosynthesis, and encourage the plant to grow early in the season and produce. 

They are stamped William Thomas & Co Ltd Wellington Somerset, who were in business between 1861 and 1966. 

Provenance: from a private collection in Berkshire.
