Regency Giltwood Armchair by Henry Holland

  • H: 89 cm (35 1/16")
  • W: 62.5 cm (24 5/8")
  • D: 76.5 cm (30 1/8")

Fantastic Regency giltwood armchair, designed by Henry Holland. Retaining its original gilt.

With wonderful shapely form, this armchair has a pronounced scrolled back with raised stepped roundels.

The high scrolling armrests and seat are adorned with foliate and cornucopia motifs.

The chair features reeded panels to the corners, and is raised up on exaggerated sabre legs.

Holland was a prolific architect and designer who served the more liberal 'wig aristocracy' of his period. He promoted a simpler, more refined take on neoclassicism which contrasted with the more lavish style of his contemporary Robert Adam.

He was certainly a Francophile, as is reflected in the elegance of his designs and this chair.

This piece is very similar to the designs Holland produced, under the direction of Samuel Whitbread II, for the drawing room at Whitbread's Southill Park in Bedfordshire.

This is a wonderful piece that reflects an excellent period in British design history.
