Rolls Royce Spey SMIC Propulsion Unit

This magnificent full size wooden replica of the first Rolls Royce Spey SMIC Propulsion Unit was manufactured by the Rolls Royce Engineers in around 1977.

It was made as a full scale mock up in order to finalise pipe runs / wiring schemes and other component fixings prior to actual production of the engines for The Royal Navy’s Type 22 and 23 Frigates. 

It is a superb example of old fashioned ‘pattern making’ before the use of computer design. Since it was built it has been on display at The Rolls Royce Heritage Trust Museum in Derby until 2017, where it was used as part of the displays to chronicle the story of Rolls Royce and the other companies which became part of the Rolls Royce family e.g. Armstrong-Siddeley and the Bristol Aeroplane Company.

The Marinised Rolls Royce Spey had a power output range ranging from 14,750BHP all the way up to 20,800 BHP and when built had a fuel consumption of about half of its predecessors.

The first two Speys built (port and starboard engines) were used in HMS Brave in 1983 and went on to be used in 21 Type 22 and Type 23 frigates. It was also used in 8 frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy and in 12 destroyers and 6 frigates of the Maritime Self-Defence Force of Japan.
