Set Of 13 Glass Dumps

Collection of 13 glass dumps of varying sizes, ranging from between two inches and six inches tall. The tall, superior quality, examples are normally seen as paperweights. They were made from ‘bottle glass’ from the mid 19th Century onwards by various bottle and window glass manufacturers in Yorkshire, the midlands and the North East of England. The glass that they were made from was a valuable commodity at the time and the manufacturers were taxed on how much glass they made irrelevant of what they did with it. So, rather than throw it away and ‘dump’ it (hence the name) or recycle it (for which they were taxed again) the manufactures made these dumps. The internal floral decorations are made of either fine metal foil, air bubble patterns or flower designs picked out in very fine powder. The air bubbles are created by the action of the molten glass on the fine powder. They all have interesting pontil marks on the bottom. One or two do have chips in them.
