Set of Eight 18th Century Engravings of Martinet Parrots

  • H: 39 cm (15 3/8")
  • W: 34 cm (13 3/8")

Set of eight beautiful hand coloured copper plate engravings of parrots.

They are presented in bespoke frames behind UV70 glass, which cuts reflection and affords the prints some protection.

These are from from the 1770- 1786 Histoire Naturelle des Oiseau, Paris Imprimerie Royale, by Le Comte de Buffon Georges- Louis Marie Leclerc.

The engravings are by Francois Nicholas Martinet (1725-1804), who was the foremost bird artist of the period and engraver and artist to the French Court.

George Louis Leclerc Buffon, (1707-1788), was of aristocratic French origin and the preeminent scientist and mathematician of the late 18th Century.

Buffon directed the Jardin des Plantes botanical garden in Paris, which still exists today. His most outstanding achievement came in the field of natural history, with the publication of the Histoire Naturelle, Generale et Particuliere (1749-1788) in 36 volumes.

For this work, Martinet created all the bird illustrations which were also published separately in Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux
