Set of Six Late 19th Century Swedish Framed Herbariums
A beautiful set of six rare antique late 19th Century or early 20th Century Swedish herbal pressed botanicals. Mounted under glass in contemporary wooden frames.
Each of the herbarium is catalogued by hand with the latin name, class/family, place of growth of the plant and date. Dating earliest 1835 up to 1939. Mounted as to suit the specimen and framed by Cotswold Art Supplies, Stow On The Wold.
French physician and botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656 -1708) is credited with first applying the term herbarium to a collection of dried, pressed plants. In the earliest herbaria, sheets of pressed, mounted plants were bound into books.
Three measure at 52cm x 35cm, two measure 49cm x 33cm and one 48cm x 32cm.
