Small 18th Century Giltwood Console Table
Small 18th Century console table with marble top.
Being of small scale, this lovely table is probably French but an Italian origin is also possible. Executed in giltwood throughout, it is in the Rococo style with serpentine apron incorporating a central shell and the legs formed of a combination of stacked C scrolls joined with a small stretcher to the back.
The moulded marble top is attractive in colour and figure, incorporating shades of brown, red, cream and white. It is shaped to match the form of the table, something that would have been difficult to achieve and therefore correspondingly expensive. The decoration on the table consists of leaf and scrollwork and some panelling on the frieze either side of the shell.
