French Absinthe Glass and Spoon

French absinthe glass.
Known as 'the green fairy,' this notorious, green anise-flavoured spirit is very much associated with the hedonism of La Belle Èpoque in Paris.
However absinthe has had a chequered history and was banned in France in 1915- a ban which would last almost 100 years.
Slotted spoon was used for dissolving a sugar cube in the absinthe to dilute it and counteract the bitter taste.
Absinthe was served in bars and cafes, but was also consumed by the working and middle classes at home- hence why you will often find full sets of glasses and spoons.
