King George’s Fund for Sailors was set up during World War One, to assist families of seafarers lost or injured at work.
Public sympathy was profound for sailors and their families at this time and Britain were at their closest point to defeat in The Great War.
This organisation, which King George V gave his name to, was necessary for keeping the public on side and providing a central body for funds to be directed to in order to assist sailors.
King George’s Fund for Sailors, known today as Seafarers UK, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017.
Since its conception, the charity has helped sailors and their families through two world wars, the Falklands War and various advancements in technology and shipping.
