Pair of Faux Bamboo Cockpen Chairs
Pair of French 20th Century faux bamboo cockpen armchairs.
These chairs feature open lattice-backs with ring-turned spindles and finials to the tops of the chair posts.
The seats rest on sturdy frames with H-stretchers and brackets.
With wonderfully distressed original white paint that exposes the beechwood frames underneath.
The construction of these chairs is in sound order and they have great decorative appeal.
The name 'cockpen' appears to have originated in the 20th Century but the chairs themselves date to the late 18th Century. Despite a clear Scottish link, this term is shrouded in mystery.
Some say they are named after the parish of Cockpen, where the local landowners - the Earls and Marquesses of Dalhousie - kept a set of these chairs in the family pew of the local church.
However, drawings of cockfights from the period also demonstrate that cockpens themselves had a very similar construction to these chairs.
They were almost certainly called 'Chinese chairs' at the time and bear many similarities to the classic Chinese Chippendale lattice-back that remains ever in vogue.
This pair has a light and timeless elegance, well-suited to period and contemporary interiors alike.
