Etching of Storks by Raineri
Early 19th Century Italian aquatint etching of fantastical storks.
This wonderful etching, hand-finished in polychrome tempera, is by Vittorio Raineri (1797-1869). The etching is after an 18th Century painting by Carlo Antonio Raineri (1765-1826).
This work is inscribed: 'Carlo Antonio Raineri invento e dipinse - Vittorio Raineri incise e colora,' meaning the former man invented and painted the concept, and the latter engraved and coloured it.
Carlo Antonio and Vittorio Raineri (father and son) were decorative artists who worked in the Lombard and Ligurian areas in the 18th and 19th century. They specialised in the highly colourful and exotic interior design that was so fashionable at the time (Scuola d'Ornato).
Presented in a giltwood frame.
