Gothic Revival Altar Table

SKU
TC105623

An outstanding Gothic Revival oak altar table.

This truly spectacular table features a rectangular top with canted corners above an elaborately carved and pierced base incorporating Gothic motifs taken from the perpendicular English style.

The sides of the table feature carved mythological birds, whilst the rest of the carving displays classic Gothic quatrefoil motifs and pointed arches.

Combining elegant proportions and robust dimensions with an attractive pale colour, this table offers a wonderful example of 19th Century Gothic Revival design and craftsmanship.

England was very much the centre of the Gothic Revival in the 19th Century, due to renewed interest in the Church and Christianity. Gothic architecture was associated with Church design and as a result lots of corresponding furniture was crafted.

Provence: Toddington Manor, Gloucestershire.

This building was designed in the Gothic style by Charles Hanbury-Tracy and built in 1820-35. It was thought to have influenced the design for the Houses of Parliament.
