Set of Four Red Tolix Chairs
Set of four French Tolix iron chairs, painted red. Circa 1920.
These iconic Tolix chairs represent one of the earliest designs by Xavier Pauchard, a Frenchman first trained as a zinc roofer.
This profession brought Pauchard to the realisation, in 1907, that metal could be protected by dipping it in molten zinc- galvanising it.
Ten years later, he set up his own factory manufacturing steel household items under the trademark 'Tolix.'
These classic chairs became a firm favourite with the hospitality industry; they could survive come rain or shine due to the holes in their seats to allow rainwater to run off.
In 1956, Pauchard bowed to pressure from cafe and restaurant owners to make the chairs more easily stackable and produced a slimmer design.
This set are an early version of the design, in pressed metal. The earlier chairs were usually painted red or in their original steel colour. Today, Tolix chairs are reproduced in all sorts of colours.
This set of chairs are perfect for adding a pop of colour and some industrial edge to your interiors.
