The Card Player- René de Pauw (Pittem, 14 June 1887 - Brussels, 26 January 1946). 

René de Pauw was a Belgian artist, draughtsman and illustrator.

At first, he painted floral compositions, portraits, nudes, landscapes; clear paintings dominated by white.

1930 was a pivotal year in his work. Inspired by the lives of the fishermen, he painted them in their family environment.

His works, often on panel, are of a dark color with monumental characters reminiscent of Permeke.
