20th Century Ziegler Sultanabad Carpet
Ziegler Sultanabad carpets were originally commissioned in Persia for the Western market during the late 19th Century, to complement European furnishing tastes. Their unique, grand scale drawing, quiet formality, and understated colours made them sought-after additions in stately homes across the UK and Europe. This example represents a late 20th Century reinterpretation of the high-end Ziegler carpets of this period. Woven in lustrous wool, featuring a sophisticated palette of gracefully aged vegetable-dyed wool, the muted terracotta of the central field tastefully accented by repeating floral motifs in duck egg blue and ivory, framed by a wide border of great proportions. This work has developed a pleasant age-related patin, adding further charm to the piece along with the balanced, open composition of the overall drawing. A great example of its type, which would make a versatile addition to compliment a wide range of interiors.
