20th Century Qum Carpet
This elegant Qum carpet has remarkable quality and crisp drawing due to the merino wool.
The artistic paisley pattern dates to a 6th Century Zoroastrian symbol denoting a floral spray with a cypress tree which is believed to represent life, longevity and eternity. Zoroastrians believe that everything created is pure and should be treated with love and respect.
The ivory field compliments the array of vegetable-dyed colours, including various greens, light blue and terracotta, framed by a wide border. The drawing is very well-spaced in relation to its format.
Rug weaving in the city of Qum only started at the beginning of the 20th century, but the city quickly established itself as a centre for exceptional fine weavings. Qum is known for unique decorative carpets with classically precise drawings and luxurious wool, often merino, setting it apart from other Persian weaving centres.
This Qum carpet is in excellent condition and still retains its original plain borders and fringes on both sides. A timeless example to complement a variety of settings.
